How to Choose a Solar Installer

A solar installation is a decade-plus investment, and the quality of the installer you choose has just as much impact on your outcome as the equipment itself. Here's what's worth checking before you commit.

1. Verify credentials and experience

Ask how long the installer has been in business, how many systems they've installed, and whether they specialize in your type of project (residential rooftop, commercial & industrial, battery storage, etc.). On SolarQuery, installers go through a verification process before they can respond to leads — but it's still worth asking directly about their track record.

2. Compare more than one quote

Prices and system designs can vary significantly between installers for the same roof. Get multiple quotes and compare not just the total price, but the equipment brands, warranty terms, and estimated system output (kWh/year) side by side.

3. Ask about warranties — equipment and workmanship

Solar panels typically carry long manufacturer warranties, but the installer's own workmanship warranty (covering the installation itself, roof penetrations, and wiring) is separate and just as important. Ask what it covers and for how long.

4. Check reviews and ask for references

Look at ratings and reviews from previous customers, and don't hesitate to ask an installer for references from similar past projects in your area.

5. Understand what's included in the quote

A complete quote should cover equipment, installation labor, any structural work, permitting/paperwork (including subsidy and net-metering applications where applicable), and a clear timeline. Vague or unusually low quotes are worth a closer look.

6. Don't skip the aftercare conversation

Ask how the installer handles maintenance, monitoring, and repairs after installation — solar systems need occasional servicing, and knowing who to call matters.

The easiest way to compare installers fairly is side by side: request quotes through SolarQuery and you'll get responses from multiple verified installers in your area to compare on your own terms, with no obligation to hire any of them.
